San Diego – The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug for erectile dysfunction that is likely to be approved by the FDA in coming weeks.
The approval for the drug, a Pfizer Viagra® that was originally developed as an anti-impotence drug, could be completed by December, the FDA said.
It's also said to be the first drug approved by the FDA to treat a rare form of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), also known as high blood pressure in the blood vessels in the lungs. The FDA approved Viagra® for erectile dysfunction in June.
The FDA is also considering whether the new drug can be used to treat pulmonary hypertension in patients with underlying heart disease.
“This is a significant milestone in the ongoing battle to find treatments for patients with erectile dysfunction. The FDA is reviewing all available scientific evidence and is working closely with the manufacturers to develop a safer, more effective treatment for patients with pulmonary hypertension,” said Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
The FDA approved the new drug in November. The drug is indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, the FDA said.
A study published in 2013 in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that a higher dose of sildenafil (Viagra®) in patients with ED could potentially be effective in treating ED.
The study, which was funded by Pfizer, showed that patients with ED had an average of three times higher blood pressure readings than patients with other risk factors for ED, including diabetes, high cholesterol and a number of cardiovascular conditions.
Pfizer is now testing several other drugs for ED. An FDA spokesman said the company does not plan to launch Viagra® until the company announces the product.
The FDA’s decision to approve Viagra® for patients with ED is likely to be seen as a major step in the ongoing battle against PAH, the underlying cause of erectile dysfunction.
